For those who've not been on FriendFeed, wanna know what it's like? It's like Slashdot, but without the critical thinking. It's like Digg, but with a better vocabulary. It's like 4chan, but without the criminal record. It's like the comments on LittleGreenFootballs during the Rathergate scandal, but without the research.

Nicely put. For me it's about finding enough time in the day to service the wide ranging social media sites i frequent. I've lurked here a time or two but only started commenting seriously when I signed up with Discus. It's nice to see a platform that seems to work without prejudice.

As for Friendfeed, hadn't tried that one yet, but will give it a try soon. keep up the commentary :)

I remember going through the same thing with LiveJournal several years ago, which led to starting a blog on my own site. I still have the Livejournal, but now use it for nothing more controversial than sharing recipes and "Twitterfeeds".

I'm sad to see you go. I rather enjoyed reading your feed. I especially liked that you were different from all the other tech bloggers, including your perspective on politics. I hope to see you come back to FF some day.

Also, I have to say that 4chan is VERY DIFFERENT from FriendFeed! Trust me, I know. :-)

I don't mind controversy, and I agree that FriendFeed is technically pretty cool.

There's a difference between controversy and streams of pejorative. There's been far to many instances of the latter for me to really function and maintain a presence on the system.

I understand that when you talk about certain delicate subjects like racism, sexuality and religion, that there are always going to be griefers and there will always be people that no matter what you say, there will be folks who call you bad names because they think you crossed a line.

When you talk about the candidates in a presidential race, though, just mentioning the name of one candidate shouldn't brand you a racist or an imbecile, particularly when there are mountains of evidence to the contrary.

Not a huge fan of FriendFeed myself. I go because I have friends and colleagues there, but I'd love a better solution for aggregation. Luckily we'll see you around the internet elsewhere though :)

From my own experience, it does get frustrating to have parts of your interests talked about in a certain way all the time because other people don't have filters. If I share a story about the Pope or the Catholic Church, for example, I'm guaranteed to get comments about how the Catholic Church done someone wrong a thousand years ago or something equally unproductive. I'd like to talk to people, who have gotten over that facile approach to the topic, about the news item, but that never happens. I can see how you've gotten so frustrated with FriendFeed, as you're very much in the minority and the same people keep trying to push their agenda every time one of your topical interests gets shared.

And I agree with your assessment on a lot of issues: "what I heard a few years ago" seems to trump "here's a reliable source contradicting what you think" almost always. People don't approach topics on FriendFeed with any sort of intellectual curiosity that maybe, somehow, what they believe could possibly be factually incorrect.

Hey Mark,

I agree, it was definitely worth a look. Here's what I found:

First things first - I came to this with an open mind and no expectations.

I read the factcheck.org article on it. The article seems pretty complete
to me - and really the only question that can be put to it is whether or not
they were handed a falsified, or outright false, document.

I looked at the video too - and although it makes claims of being made by an
independent (Molotov Mitchel), and the principal interviewee (Philip J.
Berg, Esq.) says he's a Democrat (claims that attempt to lend some form of
objectivity to the piece), I have to take a video with a grain of salt when
it was made by a production company called "Illuminati Pictures" and begins
with the claim by Jill Stanek (Who is only identified as a "Star
Congressional Witness") that Obama supported "infanticide."

I'd love to see that law.

"On the ballot for today: Infanticide. All opposed? MmmHmm, Looks like
99. All in favor? ... I see - let the record show that Barack Obama voted
in favor of infanticide."

As to the claims about the birth certificate, Philip J. Berg makes claim
that the document is a fake, but he doesn't really offer any evidence for
his claim.

I think politifact.com (quoted in the factcheck article) makes a good point
about this debate with Occam's razor, "It is possible that Obama conspired
his way to the precipice of the world's biggest job, involving a vast
network of people and government agencies over decades of lies. Anything's
possible. But step back and look at the overwhelming evidence to the
contrary and your sense of what's reasonable has to take over."

Also, as you said, the claim is hurt even more by the fact that it is so
ardently supported by white supremicist websites and organizations. All in
all, I have to assume that this claim, along with the many claims like this
in the past (This same accusation has been placed at the feet of McCain,
Dick Cheney, and Barry Goldwater), is subterfuge to distract voters from the
very real problems that we as a nation are facing.

Although I often didn't agree with your opinion on FriendFeed, I never had a problem with you stating it. And I valued it too -- it helped me understand different sides of the issues being discussed.

So, yeah I'll be sad to see you go when all we have in FF is vanilla pudding with a few nuts (nutjobs?) thrown in. Hopefully you will reconsider. Until that time, I'm definitely subscribed here and I'll be looking forward to your articles.

Dude, i've grown to think you're pretty cool - don't just ditch a community because a few people tick you off or one/two of your shares caused a bit of controversy. Use the tools available, block, delete, hide, use lists...heck, even privatize your account etc...

This really is one of the most awesome socnets out there if you make of it what you want. You've made your point, people have taken notice and I have no doubt that all the politics talk will simmer down after these elections are over.

With regard to your comment - I think you were a lil naive to think that any mention of either Obama or Mccain in whatever context wasn't going to drum up controversy...but hell, that's just my opinion.

All I'm really saying is hold out, don't delete your account (which can do here if you have to https://friendfeed.com/acco... and hold out until after the elections. Even spend a bit more customizing your feed and see how things go...
